Thanks to an an anonymous contributor for these pictures of the Chichester shop. The shop is closed. How ineffably sad. Recent comments on the SPCK SSG blog indicate that it will take a huge financial effort to fix the fabric of the building. Hopefully the Diocese will see fit to move soon and get the shop re-opened.

There have been notices on other bookshop doors. This is the only one where customers are thanked for many years of support.

I wonder whether the sign was written by a retailer rather than an auditor, as a retailer would not only think to thank the customers who’d kept the shop going for years, but would also harbour a hope to see them again in a newly re-opened shop.

Blank shelves of Durham.
Where once we browsed that old Great Kitchen pile;
`twixt church of God and River Wear`s cliff.

Blank shelves of Durham.
How once we loved that old Great Kitchen pile;
`twixt church of God and River Wear`s cliff.
“Half castle `gainst the Scot” (but not the Yank!)
where we once browsed among well-furnished shelves.
That well-stocked state, alas, is long forgot -
that space leased out to Brewers` rascalry.
(with apologies to Sir Walter Scott and Prebend`s Bridge)

Sorry, comment 3 was the computer having a mind of its own in mid-comment, when I tried to alter position of title. Should change my name to Last-of-the Luddites!

My compupter has suffered a severe case of Breweritis. If perhaps you are taking the p**s – I’ll cut your throat Shakespearian style.

It`s Ezra who`s doing Shakesperian quotes on ants.
Prithee nuncle, the Brewers be carbuncles.
But that would cause p*s not p**s, though verily you be p**sed off with them – and the computer!

Nothing happening in Durham so doesn’t look likely that it’s going anywhere except seriously downhill and a terrible advert for the Christian book trade which needs that kind of advertising at present the same as a bear with a sore head.
